“The Truth We Live”
Scripture:
“If we say, ‘We have fellowship with Him,’ and yet walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth.”
—1 John 1:6 (CSB)
It’s easy to say, “I have a relationship with God,” and we all have. But what does that look like in everyday life? John challenges us in this verse to take a hard look at the lives we live versus the words we speak to see if they align with the life we think we are living. I realized that, despite my growth, there are still areas where I need to continue growing and changing. It's a tough pill to swallow, but, incredibly, the Lord doesn't expect us to be perfect.
Achieving this growth will only occur through fellowship with the Lord and a shift in our understanding of the concept of fellowship. “Fellowship” with God isn’t just attending church or knowing a few scriptures. It means being part of something deeply intimate, a shared life with God and with His people. It’s communion. It’s a partnership. It’s walking so closely with Him that your heart, mind, and actions reflect His character. It’s not a label, it’s a lifestyle.
John says, if we claim this kind of relationship with God and yet “walk in darkness,” that is, live in ongoing sin, stay blind to God’s truth, or refuse to turn away from what we know is wrong, then our words are empty. We are lying to ourselves and others. Living in darkness means letting sin, ignorance, or rebellion shape your life, rather than allowing the light of God’s truth to guide you.
God has called us out of that darkness. 1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” That’s not just a change in status, it’s a call to a new way of living. When we walk with Him, we should walk in a manner like Him, meaning to live our life a certain way to make progress, to pursue, to stay in step. And to “practice the truth” means actively doing what is right, living in alignment with God’s Word, and building a life that reflects His goodness.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about direction. It’s about choosing each day to move toward the light, to say yes to God, and to let our lives speak louder than our words.
Reflect:
· Does my life reflect the intimacy I claim to have with God?
· Are there areas where I’m still walking in darkness, choosing my way over God’s?
· What would it look like today to walk in His light and practice His truth?
Prayer:
Lord, I don’t just want to talk about You; I want to live for You. Expose any darkness in my heart and lead me into Your marvelous light. Help me to walk in truth and reflect the fellowship I have with You in every part of my life. Lord, I give you everything that I am in humility and surrender, and I ask for forgiveness when my spirit is not in the right place when Your truth is being revealed. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
